一篇小品，讲的是一位教授的退休生活。我求助理解的句子，均在中文翻译处均用（？）作了标记――我的疑惑写在了括号内。

1. But the radical thing about his new life was the house he had build for himself in the spring semester of his last year at the college. It was a house of tomorrow…… The house, though small and narrow, was long, and it looked like a ship,… from every point(of the deck) he could watch the multiform weather: there dark rain, here blinding sunshine, yonder sulphurous dust storm, haze on the summit of one peak, a pillow of cloud concealing a second, hyaline light on the glacier of a third.

2. Imagine this character, with his silver beard, wearing a mussed green tweed suit. those gaiters, a still-collared shirt, a Tyrolian hat, sitting in a black sling chair on the front deck of this gleaming, youthful house ,drinking ginger beer out of aearthenware mug and looking through binoculars at eagles and the weather.

When, after seventeen wan, lengthy months, he was discharged from the sanitorium, not as cured but as arrested, his careful doctors counselled him to go West, to the Rocky Mountains, under whose blue, bright skies he could, in time, rout the last bacterium.
伯曼的妻子在两年前他还没退休时就过（去）世了，当年，他们是一起从弗赖堡经由蒙特利尔才来到科罗拉多州的。在蒙特利尔期间，伯曼就已开始引起亚当斯大学的关注，可一场突如其来的胃部大出血，拖住了他正在大踏步前进的事业的后腿。随后是在疗养院里长达数月的治疗，在先后17次战胜死神（wan可以这么译么？）后，医生这才允许他出院――不是因为病愈，而是因为肺功能暂时丧失。（是这个意思么？）此时，细心的医生建议他到西部去，到落基山脉地区，在那儿蔚蓝而明亮的天空下他才有可能及时地战胜病魔的最后一次袭击（还是说最后能除掉病灶，根除疾病？）。
4 Adams was high above sea level and its prospect of soaring palisades and pinnacles of rock was magnificent, if, at first, dismaying to European eyes that has been accustomed to grandeur on a smaller scale.
